Overview
'Type Approval' refers to certification by a Classification Society (such as ABS or DNV-GL) that equipment carried on board ships complies with the requirements of the flag administration to which they are contracted, as regards design, construction and performance, and are therefore suitable to be installed on ships under their class approval regime.
Classification societies conduct assessments of the design, construction, functionality and manufacturing process of products, and issue certificates to certify that the product meets the specified requirements.
Test houses (such as TUV) test equipment against specific standards (such as the environmental standard IEC 60945) that have been specified by the administration or the classification societies on their behalf, and certify that a product meets that standard.
