Overview

The Integrated Radiocommunications System (IRCS) is a system in which individual radiocommunication equipment are used as sensors providing outputs to, and accepting inputs from an operator's position, called a 'workstation'. Such a workstation is called a 'GMDSS workstation' if it includes control and monitoring of all equipment and installations provided for the GMDSS.

Performance standard, testing standard & carriage requirement

  • IRCS must comply with IMO Res. A.811(19): Shipborne integrated radiocommunication system when used in the GMDSS
  • The international testing standard IEC 62940: Integrated communication system (ICS) incorporates the applicable parts of the performance standards included in Res. A.811(19) for an IRCS.

Background information on IEC 62940 from Peter Andersen

The test standard IEC 62940 (ICS) is intended to provide tests in relation to the IRCS described in A.811(19). When developing IEC 62940 it was decided to follow the intentions described in the very old and technically outdated A.811(19) but to use today’s technology as a platform. In IEC 62940, the ICS is considered a separate and dedicated GMDSS network, allowing other functions to be included in the network. In a ships installation the ICS network and the INS network are to be two separate networks, which can the connected following the requirements detailed in IEC 62940 chapter 5 and 7.

Typical system components

  • At least two GMDSS workstations each connected to each GMDSS radiocommunication sensor over a network or connection system
  • At least two printers
  • Facilities for automatically and manually updating the ships's position and time
  • A power supply arrangement that prevents any part of the the IRCS being switched off inadvertently
  • Detection facilities that activate an alarm if there is a failure of any part of the IRCS
  • Protection against computer viruses
